TurboLaw Toolbar "Edit Document" button is Missing

When you install TurboLaw on your computer, it also adds a toolbar into both Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel to help you when editing TurboLaw documents (since TurboLaw documents open in Word and Excel). This toolbar contains the Edit Document button, which lets you unprotect a document and edit it. If this button does not appear for you, this article will explain how to bring the toolbar back.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Starting with Office 2007, Word and Excel no longer have "toolbars" in the traditional sense. Instead, you have a single "ribbon" which consists of "tabs" at the top of the window. Because of this, the instructions vary depending on whether you are using Word 2010, Word 2007, or Word 2003 or earlier.

For Word 2007 and 2010

For a video presentation of this article, click here to watch "How to Restore a Missing TurboLaw Toolbar."

The TurboLaw "Edit Document" button appears on the Home tab, on the far right-hand side. It appears in a section labeled "TurboLaw."

If you do not see this button, then the add-in may not be loaded in Microsoft Word. This may happen if you had Microsoft Word open when TurboLaw was installing the toolbar.

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure that Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Excel, and TurboLaw are completely closed.
  2. Click on your Start menu and point to All Programs > TurboLaw > Utilities
  3. Click on Install Word Toolbar. Follow the on-screen prompts to install the toolbar.

The TurboLaw toolbar should now be installed. You can open Microsoft Word to check to see if the Edit Document button appears on the Home tab, on the far right-hand side.

If the above steps did not bring the toolbar back, then the add-in may be installed, but not loaded in Microsoft Word. To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Open Microsoft Word
  2. Click on the Office Button (the big round button in the top-left corner), or, if you have Word 2010, click the File menu
  3. Click on Word Options (or Options if you have Word 2010)
  4. From the left-hand side, click on Add-ins
  5. At the bottom of the window, click the drop-down box labeled Manage and select COM Add-Ins, then click Go
  6. In this window, make sure TurboLawToolbar is listed and is checked, then click OK
  7. At the bottom of the window again, click the drop-down box labeled Manage and select Disabled Items, then click Go
  8. If ADDIN: TurboLawToolbar is listed, select it and click Enable, then click OK
  9. Close and re-open Microsoft Word for the changes to take effect.

When you re-open Microsoft Word, the TurboLaw Edit Document button should appear on the Home tab, on the far right-hand side.

For Word 2003 and earlier

For a video presentation of this article, click here to watch "How to Restore a Missing TurboLaw Toolbar."

To make the TurboLaw toolbar (along with the "Edit Document" button) appear, simply follow these steps.

  1. Click the View menu at the top of Microsoft Word's window.
  2. Point to Toolbars.
  3. From this list, click on TurboLaw (it will generally appear at the bottom of the list)
  4. The TurboLaw toolbar should now be visible (it may appear in a different portion of your screen).

If the above steps did not bring the toolbar back, then Word may have disabled the TurboLaw toolbar by mistake. To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

1.Click on the Help menu and choose About Microsoft Word.
2. Click on the Disabled Items button
3. In this window, look for items labeled with the TurboLaw name, e.g., turbolaw.dot or ADDIN:turbolaw.dot. or ADDIN:TurboLawToolbar. If you find one (or both), select them one at a time and click the Enable button. Repeat this until all the TurboLaw items are gone from the list.
4. Click Close and then completely close out of Microsoft Word for the changes to take effect.

When you re-open Microsoft Word, the TurboLaw toolbar should now be visible.

If neither of these sets of steps brought the TurboLaw toolbar back, then you may simply need to re-install the TurboLaw toolbar. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure that Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Excel, and TurboLaw are closed.
  2. Click on your Start menu and point to All Programs > TurboLaw > Utilities
  3. Click on Install Word Toolbar. A screen will appear as the toolbar is installed; once it is complete it will close on its own.

When you re-open Microsoft Word, the TurboLaw toolbar should now be visible.

If none of these steps return your TurboLaw toolbar, you many need to re-install it manually. Click here for instructions on how to re-install the TurboLaw toolbar.
