Caption text appears compressed/condensed/overlapping

When working in some MA/Criminal Law motions, the text in the caption of the document (usually not the main caption, but the caption on subsequent pages - for example, the affidavit) may appear "compressed" or "condensed," with the letters overlapping.

This behavior is caused by a specific font setting in Microsoft Word which has been found to be mistakenly turned on in certain documents.

To correct this behavior, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure your document is unprotected by clicking the Edit Document button.
  2. Select the problematic text so that it is highlighted
  3. Open the Font dialog box
    • In Word 2007 or 2010, click the little arrow in the bottom-right corner of the Font section of the ribbon as shown here:

    • In Word 2003 or earlier, click the Format menu and choose Font.
  4. In Word 2007 and 2010, click the Advanced tab. In Word 2003 and earlier, click the Character Spacing tab.
  5. Click the Spacing drop down box and change it from Condensed to Normal, then click OK.

Once you have done this, the text will appear correctly.
