Excel-based forms (e.g., Financial forms) opening in "Protected View"

If you are using Microsoft Excel 2010, you may experience a problem where some (or all) Excel-based forms (such as financial forms) will only open in "Protected View," and no information will be filled out.

Unlike the normal "protected view" mode in Excel that may occur when opening a file from an untrusted location (e.g., the Internet), this "protected view" uses a red warning bar and cannot be turned off. The warning will say: Office has detected a problem with this file. Editing it may harm your computer. Click for more details.

This problem is caused by a known bug in Microsoft Excel. It will occur if you have the original, no-updates-installed version of Microsoft Excel.

To resolve this problem, install the latest updates for Microsoft Excel (or Microsoft Office). Specifically, you should install the Office 2010 File Validation update from September 13, 2011. Alternatively, you can install the latest service pack for Microsoft Office 2010, which as of the date of this article is Office 2010 Service Pack 2.
